Area Health Education Centers
The Western Maryland Area Health Education Center (WMAHEC) has served the rural Appalachian counties of Maryland since 1976. It is part of a national effort consisting of over 100 AHEC centers.
AHEC centers work toward community-based health professional development by acting as interdisciplinary bridges between their health professional communities and one or more health science centers.
AHEC centers link health professionals with practice opportunities in rural and underserved communities throughout the United States, support rural health care practitioners, and maximize medical resource sharing.

The WMAHEC's clinical education program serves health professional students-in-training and residents from more than a dozen universities in the mid-Atlantic region. Students work one-to-one with area health care practitioners who serve as preceptors and have the opportunity to live in an interdisciplinary enviroment.

Service Region
The WMAHEC serves the people of Allegany, Garrett, and Washington counties. WMAHEC also works cooperatively with other nonmetropolitan communities of Maryland, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.
Located in the small city of Cumberland (Allegany County) in the scenic Allegheny Mountains, the WMAHEC office and residence is 150 miles west of Baltimore, MD, 140 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, PA, and 75 miles east of Morgantown, WV. Housing is also available in Hagerstown, MD (Washington County) and Oakland, MD (Garrett County).
The rotation will familiarize students and residents with unique health care problems and needs found in rural and small city areas. The rotation fosters an understanding of the interrelationship between the community, the environment and the health of community members.

The Rural Rotation
The Western Maryland AHEC clinical rotations will expose students and residents to a broad spectrum of practice experiences in a supportive, professional community.
WMAHEC rotations take place in a small city to very rural locations, depending upon the preferences of the participant and the availability of preceptors. MUA and HPSA designated sites are available.
WMAHEC rotations strive to increase the participant's knowledge not only in clinical and diagnostic skills, but to create an intense awareness of the community health resources that are essential for successful patient care and interprofessional cooperation.
Preceptors are able to foster fresh perspectives on health care, clinical and didactic training, and life goals. Highlights of the rotation are the understanding and management of the practical, medical and social problems encountered in daily practice.
The WMAHEC rotation begins with an orientation to the area's demographics, geography and health care services, followed by a health service tour of the area.
Participants have easy access to the WMAHEC Learning Resources Center, a network of health sciences libraries, audiovisual equipment, computers and meeting rooms.
Visits to health care facilities within the area can be arranged to enhance the students experience .
Living and dining facilities are shared with other WMAHEC program participants. These are students and professionals from a wide variety of health care disciplines representing many colleges and universities.
The WMAHEC takes responsibility for arranging living accommodations for participants during the rotation. Accommodations can usually be made for married residents and their families as well!
