Since the Western Maryland AHEC began offering rural rotations to University of Maryland medical students in 1977, the Center has coordinated rotations for over 1,300 students from a variety of disciplines and schools. More than 40 percent of AHEC students have gone on to practice in small towns or rural settings.

The students also take part in the AHEC's interdisciplinary curriculum which is designed to enhance understanding of the area, develop interprofessional dialogue and collaboration, raise awareness of alternative methods of care, and integrate information into clinical services.

The eight points of this curriculum are:

  • orientation to the area and its demographics
  • area tours
  • elective site visitations
  • informational interviews with health professionals
  • interdisciplinary seminars
  • case presentations
  • literature search
  • exit interviews
