Overview

The Rural Interdisciplinary Teams Module will acquaint faculty and students with the practice of various disciplines, explain what and how interdisciplinary health teams operate across the care continuum, delineate team process considerations, present interdisciplinary case studies, overview rural health care issues, and provide assignments that will require the student to seek out and interact with other disciplines. The module is available for use by faculty and students in any health professions course or clinical experience.

Objectives

Upon completion of the rural interdisciplinary teams module, participants will be able to:

  • describe the roles and functions of interdisciplinary teams and the impact of this care model on the consumer, family, and team itself;
  • describe the characteristics of an effective interdisciplinary health care team;
  • identify barriers to successful team function;
  • identify unique health care needs of the consumers in rural settings, particularly in the western Maryland region;
  • explain the difference between unidisciplinary, multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary;
  • describe the similarites and differences of at least three different health professions.
