The following enrichment activities are from the World Wide Web.  Programs available for students in Western Maryland who are interested in science and/or health careers have also been listed.

Local Programs

  • Health Connections 2000 - We can arrange for you to "shadow" a health professional to learn more about the field you are interested in.

  • Health Careers Opportunity Program - Academic enrichment and information on health careers offered through summer programs.  

  • Health Occupations Students of America - A national vocational student organization.  Local meetings are at the Allegany County Board of Education Careers and Technology Center in Cumberland (contact:   Linda Snyder, (301) 729-6486) and Washington County Technical High (contact:   Marjorie Kellman).

  • Regional Math Science Center, Frostburg State University.  Six-week summer program for students currently in the 8th, 9th, 10th or 11th grade (8th graders do not begin participation until the summer following their 8th grade year).  The program is completely free to all participants; however, eligibility criteria does apply.  Contact:  301-687-4295.

  • Student Health Action and Recruitment Education (S.H.A.R.E.).  Program for middle school students that includes in-school presentations, hospital tours, community service projects, health-focused club, and summer Health Careers Camp.

  • Teen Volunteer Positions at Western Maryland Health System.  Applications accepted from January through April only.   Information on the health system can be found at http://www.wmhs.com.
